London Global Cancer Week is taking place from 15th to 20th November 2020 and is highlighting the important contribution the UK makes partnering with colleagues all over the world, to support people with cancer in poorer resourced countries. 2020 is also Florence Nightingale’s bicentennial year, designated by the World Health Organisation as the ‘International Year of the Nurse and Midwife’. Nurses and midwives by far make up the largest numbers of the healthcare workforce globally and thus we wish to hold a special cancer nursing event in a very special year for nurses.
The Royal College of Nursing, the UK Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS) and the Royal Marsden Hospital are working together to deliver an interactive day of international discussions, alongside virtual events hosted by the Royal Society of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, London School of Tropical Medicine, US National Cancer Institute and more.
The virtual nursing event will take place on Tuesday 17th November, showcasing how nurses are strengthening capacity in cancer control systems in many LMICs, focussing on solutions to improved cancer care in a world where Universal Health Coverage is far from reality. Nurses do make a huge impact on the burden caused by the rising incidence of cancer in low and middle-income countries. Nurses are often, the first and only point of care in their communities and millions of nurses are needed – soon.

“The speakers were all inspirational, sharing their experiences of working in extraordinary circumstances around the world. The importance of compassion in cancer nursing was truly reinforced.”
Dr Verna Lavender
“An excellent conference. Nursing is such a wonderful profession and this event highlighted the value, commitment, ingenuity and compassion of nurses around the world. So proud to be a nurse.”
Philippa Jones, Acute Oncology Nurse Advisor.
